Iivi Anna Masso

Iivi Anna Masso was Editor-in-Chief of the monthly magazine Diplomaatia (Diplomacy – a publication of the ICDS) from the end of 2010 till December 2012. Before that, she worked as a freelance writer and independent policy analyst in Finland and Estonia.

In 2002–2008, Iivi worked as a researcher and a lecturer at the Departments of Political Science and Practical Philosophy of the University of Helsinki, specialising in contemporary political philosophy, democratic theories and human rights. Before that, she spent 2000–2001 in New York as a visiting scholar at the New School for Social Research and 1999–2000 in Budapest as a doctoral student at the Central European University, studying social theory, international relations and comparative politics.

Iivi got her PhD in Political Sciences from the University of Helsinki in 2006 (Democratic Legitimacy and the Politics of Rights, Helsinki University Press). She has published a number of academic articles in Finnish and Estonian journals and books. She has an MPhil in Political Science from the CEU (1999) and an MA in Philosophy from the University of Helsinki (1997).

Iivi has contributed as a freelance journalist to several Finnish and Estonian publications since 1993. She has done radio programmes for the Finnish public broadcaster Yle and is also still writing columns for the Estonian daily Postimees and the Finnish online newspaper Uusi Suomi in collaboration with Yle Radio.
